SYNC

Easy, automated synchronisation

Sync your device and MEGA using MEGA Desktop App. It’s as easy as a few clicks.

Why sync?

Easily access the latest version of your files anywhere, anytime

Any changes to the synced files on your computer will automatically and instantly apply to MEGA or vice versa, so you can access the most up-to-date versions of these files from any device by logging into MEGA.

Sync the folders shared with you to enhance collaboration

Collaborate on your computer

When a user shares a synced folder with you, you can sync this folder with your computer. This way, you and the person who shared the folder can collaborate on it on your computers, and the changes, such as adding, deleting, moving, or editing files within the folder, will be automatically applied to MEGA and the other person’s computer.

Collaborate on any file type

Sync shared folders to easily collaborate on assignments or work projects involving any file type.

Sync the way you want

Sync all your MEGA folders or just some

You can choose to sync your entire MEGA Cloud with a folder on your computer, or select specific folders to sync.

Filter your syncs

Create filtered syncs by choosing to sync only certain file names, file sizes, or file types, such as images or PDF files, in a folder.

Secure syncing

With MEGA’s zero-knowledge encryption, your synced files are stored securely in MEGA. Only you will have access to them and will be able to see or read them.

Other useful features

Sync multiple computers with MEGA at the same time

Sync as many computers as you want simultaneously with MEGA. Any modifications you make to a synced folder on one computer will automatically apply to MEGA and other computers.

Compatibility

Sync on Windows, macOS, or Linux, or even between different operating systems. For example, if you’re on macOS, you can share synced folders with someone who will sync these folders on Windows.

Browser integration

After installing the MEGA Desktop App, you can set up syncs from MEGA on your browser and the folder will be synced as soon as the app is running.

Coming soon: enhanced syncing

Improved filtering

We’re improving the way you can control and filter the files you’d like to sync from a folder. Instead of the current computer-specific and difficult-to-edit textbox in settings, every synced folder will include a text file. This file contains a set of rules and is synced with the folder that you’re syncing, so these rules will automatically apply to the folder when synced to other computers. These files can easily be edited or updated by replacing them with files from other syncs.

Suspended syncs

Suspend your syncs instead of disabling them. This way, syncing and updating local folders on external hard drives becomes easier as the sync will pick up the changes in MEGA and apply them locally.

Easy issue resolving

You’ll be notified if MEGA Desktop App runs into sync issues that it can’t resolve. You’ll be able to view these issues and the required actions to resolve them in the desktop app.

Case-sensitive syncing

Since MEGA allows case-sensitive file naming, such as “Assignment” and “assignment”, if you want to sync such files between MEGA and your computer with case-insensitive file naming, you’ll be asked to rename one of these files to continue syncing. This will ensure both files are synced accurately, instead of being synced as one file in a case-insensitive file system.

Change-based rather than time-based syncing

Syncing will take place based on the recent updates to your files instead of the date of the updated file. For example, if you update a file with an older version on your computer, sync will ignore the time of this version as an old version and will update the file in your MEGA with this version as being the latest change.

Visibility of all your syncs

Get real-time updates on the status of all your synced folders from one central place – the backup centre. You can also stop syncing any folders from here too. It’s easy.

Frequently asked questions

How does MEGA sync my files?

During startup, the desktop app will scan all local files in synced folders for changes and also request changes that occurred in your cloud drive since it was last stopped, and compare them. While it’s running, it will receive and act upon real-time notifications of all changes in synchronised folders, both on the local computer and in the cloud. It will make sync decisions based on a complex matrix and perform appropriate file or folder creation, upload, download, deletion, and rename operations, locally and in the cloud, keeping both sides up to date.

How do I set up multiple selective syncs?

When you install the desktop app, the installation wizard allows you to either sync your entire MEGA account to one folder on your computer or allows you to configure multiple selective syncs between specific folders on your computer and your MEGA account. You can easily add or remove selective syncs from the Sync tab in your Settings or Preferences. Note that a sync removal does not delete the underlying data from your computer or MEGA Cloud.

How is sync different from backup?

Sync is two-way, which means it automatically syncs data from your computer to MEGA and also from MEGA to your computer. Both places mirror each other and have identical sets of data. For example, when you update files or folders (such as edit, move or delete) on your computer, they are also updated on MEGA, and if you update files or folders on MEGA, they are also updated on your computer. Backup, however, is one-way, which means it automatically copies data from your computer to MEGA, but not the other way around. For example, when you update files or folders (such as edit, move or delete) on your computer, they are also updated in MEGA.
